"Light and Shadow"
A wall in a room. Light is coming in from each of the four little square windows. The light is reflected on the north wall. As the sun goes down, the four square frames start moving. The light frame moves towards the east wall and becomes a diamond. Then, after a while, the third frame moves to where the first frame was. It seems that there is an lofty forest outside. The movement of tree shadows reflects softly in the four frames. It may be that the rise and fall of the wind causes the shadows in the frames to move quickly and slowly and to resemble a shadow picture. The right frame has moved quite a lot now and it has reached the door knob. The door knob is shining as if polished by the shadows of the trees. The tip of the knob looks like a mysterious psychedelic sculpture. All this was in a brief space of time. The window frame becomes a sharper diamond and moves from the door knob. Now the knob is ordinary. The light returns to the knob from the other three windows reproducing the same transformation. If it is a fine windy day tomorrow the shadows will be drawn on the walls again. I come close to the walls and watch the shadows of the trees and the shadow pictures that the wind drew for a while. I can clearly see the tree tops moving vigorously. And the camera obscura of Leonardo da Vinci, that outside view reflected in a dark room, flashes across my mind. It is impossible to draw the way those trees move. I can only see them. The shadow pictures on the walls tell me to continue watching them and to discover what I can see. I spend many days watching the blink of light and shade from the four windows. I play music with it. I especially like the piece by Brigid Fontaine together with The Chicago Jazz Ensemble and I decide to watch the shadows with this music all the time. Doing this, I can hardly hear anything outside. The music and the light from the windows touch and separate from each other mysteriously and bring me a pleasant sensation. When the sun sets, the shadow pictures become indistinct. They disappear before I know.
